It is imperative that childhood growth and development is monitored in order to prevent the development of obesity and associated co-morbidities. It is important to remember that weight is a sensitive topic to all of us and in particular the child’s weight and growth should be treated with sensitivity. If a parent comes to your clinic seeking help regarding their child’s weight, they should be treated with support and encouragement. Research has shown that doctors, nurses and other health professionals demonstrate weight bias and discrimination towards those who are overweight. It is vital that all health professionals advocate for their patients. See a
tool-kit for preventing weight bias here.
