The W82GO Child and Adolescent Obesity Service was established in 2005 in response to the increasing health problems associated with childhood obesity. The service is family based and is delivered by a part-time multidisciplinary team including representatives from paediatric dietetics, paediatric physiotherapy and paediatric clinical psychology. In addition, the team is supported by an administrative support team.
Each member of the team is highly qualified in the area of clinical childhood obesity management and we pay particular attention to promoting a sensitive, respectful and empowering atmosphere. The service provides children and teenagers with an evidence-based assessment in order to identify the child’s/teenager’s strengths and to form a treatment plan with the family. Assessment also allows us to screen for the physical and emotional difficulties that some children/teenagers experience. .Regardless of what difficulties a child may or may not present with, our service is committed to ensuring the family are empowered to become as healthy as possible. Treatment focuses on optimizing nutrition, self-esteem, family communication and physical fitness training in a supportive safe environment. Treatment is guided by the most up-to-date research and provides educational and practical training. Families often comment on how the combination of practical and educational activities are beneficial to them. Treatment is delivered via a group-based evening programme or in one-to-one outpatient sessions during normal working hours.
